FIABCI, the International Real Estate Federation, announced that it is accepting submissions for an international competition to support its “The City We Need is Affordable” campaign, focused on identifying and sharing best formulas and practices related to affordable housing.

In the next 35 years, according to United Nations statistics, the world population might increase by up to 2 billion. The number of people living in urban settings will nearly double since such environments offer employment, innovation, public transportation and cultural opportunities.

There is already a severe shortage of moderately priced housing in cities worldwide. To address the current and future housing crisis, FIABCI launched “The City We Need is Affordable” campaign. As the leading international organization representing the global real estate community and with its special NGO consultative status at the United Nations, FIABCI is uniquely positioned to bring together major urban stakeholders. “Up to now, affordable housing initiatives have been mainly undertaken by governments and urban authorities through subsidies, tax incentives, rezoning and allocation of extra air-rights. Our objective is to get the private sector involved to significantly expand activities and projects in this field and to substantially increase the supply of moderately-priced housing for rent and for sale for people working and living in cities,” explained Danielle Grossenbacher, FIABCI World President.

To reach this goal, FIABCI is actively seeking:

-Financing formulas attractive and rewarding for investors
-New construction methods, materials, design and technological innovations reducing the time and cost of  construction without sacrificing quality
-Smartly planned sustainable communities, practical for an urban workforce
-Successful affordable developments with creative new components such as urban farming, work/live environments,  etc.
-Effective public/private partnership formulas

FIABCI is calling upon global industry experts to take an active role in the campaign by submitting innovative and successful realizations in the fields mentioned above. Submissions must be received by May 16.

In June, all entrees will be reviewed and evaluated by a team of international real estate industry experts. The best solutions will be showcased at FIABCI’s Urban Campaign Event in Quito, Ecuador, on October 18 2016, during the Habitat III Conference.

“Well planned cities afford all residents the opportunity to lead safe, healthy and productive lives. Promoting social inclusion, resilience, innovation and prosperity is a global challenge that we must all meet,” said Grossenbacher.

The City We Need Campaign is an outgrowth of the World Urban Campaign and will be one of the focuses of the United Nations Habitat III conference being held in Quito, Ecuador from Oct 17-20, 2016. The conference will develop a 20-year urbanization strategy, called the New Urban Agenda, seeking urban solutions, initiatives, best practices, social policies, legislation and models.
