Emma Watson, the Harry Potter actress, used an offshore company to buy a multi-million pound property according to the leaked latest Panama Papers.
In a written statement Watson’s spokesman Luke Windsor said :
“Emma (like many high-profile individuals) set up an offshore company for the sole purpose of protecting her anonymity and safety. U.K. companies are required to publicly publish details of their shareholders and therefore do not give her the necessary anonymity required to protect her personal safety, which has been jeopardised in the past owing to such information being publicly available.”
The spokesperson emphasized that “Emma receives absolutely no tax or monetary advantages from this offshore company whatsoever – only privacy.”
The actress, currently taking a break from acting to campaign for feminism, bought a London home in 2013 a month after setting up an entity called Falling Leaves in the British Virgin Islands.
The Panama Papers are a cache of more than 11 million confidential documents from a Panama law firm leaked to and published online last month by an international consortium of journalists who have been busy combing the database for details on how rich, famous and powerful people hide their wealth in offshore accounts and tax havens.
