World’s first underground hotel opens in Shanghai
The world’s first underground hotel opened in China. Founded in an old stone quarry, the hotel is not towards the sky but towards the underground.
InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, the world’s first underground hotel, opened 30 kilometers from the center of Shanghai. The hotel is located in an old mine pit near Sheshan Mountain National Forest Park and Chenshan Mountain Botanical Gardens.
InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is 18 floors. The hotel is 16 floors underground. The rooms of the lower two floors are under water. The hotel has 336 rooms and a suite service. The hotel has four meeting rooms and large ballrooms. There is also a restaurant, a pool and a water sports center in the hotel’s underwater section.
The hotel was designed by architects who created Dubai’s Burj Al Arab. The construction of the hotel took about 10 years to complete.
